Working from home to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant changes in the lifestyles of employees. While telecommuting from the comfort of one’s home may seem like a relaxed work environment, reports reveal that the reality is far from it. According to a survey conducted by Refinery in America, about 73 percent of people suffer from burn out to work overload and stress in May 2020.

With internet accessibility and perceived employee availability, managers are unable to create a work-life balance and hence a majority of people are now suffering from being burned out due to overwork. This will not only effect the employees’ productivity but will lead to mental depression, stress from work, and their domestic issues.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, general work stressors are: extra workload, longer working hours, working on weekends, lack of work-life balance, job security, etc… People in every field of life are facing one or more of these stressors every day. These cause them anxiety, fatigue, temper issues, and other health-related problems that eventually deteriorate health and morale.

Communicate with your employees regularly. If an employee is showing signs of exhaustion or dispirited defiance at work projects this could be an early sign of burn out. Talk to the employee and be understanding. Give them some time to relax. While managers can’t eliminate all the work stressors, being sensitive to them and acknowledging them will go a long way with helping employees cope with them.

In these tough times, it is important to motivate the employees by recognizing their efforts and celebrate their accomplishments. Implement activities that would reduce their stress like enrolling the team in various activity classes’ online or even light-hearted discussion by video conferencing. Encourage the employees to keep a work-life balance and avoid working late hours. These small steps will bring a positive change in employees and they will be more productive while being healthy and happy.
